Let’s be honest, we are not all do-it-yourself types of people. Frankly, some things shouldn’t even be attempted by someone without a license for fear of damaging your home or worse yourself. You’ve got a clogged drain and are thinking about tackling it yourself. Well, it may be a good idea to put that wrench down. Here are 5 signs it’s time you call a plumbing contractor.
1. No Water or Low Pressure
Big red warning flags are flying if you have low water pressure, but sirens are blaring if you have no water at all. Call the “troops” immediately.
No Water
While it could be that the houses next to you don’t have water either, the reason for alarm is that it’s only your house that is affected. If it’s the latter, you could have a massive leak undermining the structural integrity of your house.
If water isn’t coming out of your faucets like it should be, assume that it’s coming out somewhere else. This could be behind your walls or under your flooring!
Frozen or clogged pipes could also be the culprit. In that case, you would still want a plumbing contractor to come take a look.
Low Pressure
Similarly, low pressure signifies there could be a small crack or hole in your pipes. Sometimes, old pipes start to show wear with cracks or breaks.
This isn’t an issue to ignore either. Though you still are getting water, the same way that a massive leak affects the foundation of your home so does one that slowly leaks over time.
There is a good chance that drywall may need to be removed or flooring pulled up in order to find the location of the leak. So, don’t try this one at home unless you really trust your contracting skills.
There’s not as much reason to worry if you’re only experiencing low pressure from one fixture. This could be a blocked aerator issue. While not as destructive, you still may want a professional’s help.
2. Slow Drainage
If you’ve done what you can with a store-bought snake and are still experiencing slow drainage, it’s time to pick up the phone and make a call. Continuing to try to fix it yourself can actually cause more damage.
Your plumbing contractor will have a great knowledge of the network of pipes. They will likely come prepared with a special camera to survey them and pinpoint the issue.
3. Odors
No one wants to have sewage smells coming out of their kitchen sink. This is a gross sign of a blocked pipe or, even worse, a burst sewer pipe.
4. Water Heater Issues
This may surprise you, but not having hot water is not the only thing to watch for with your water heater. Check it often for signs of rust, sweat, or pools of water.
These are signs of leaks. Your plumbing and heating contractor will know how to inspect and diagnose the issue.
5. Leaks
Your faucet won’t stop dripping and the pipe under your sink is leaking. Sometimes these seem like easy fixes with some tape or tightening, but it’s not always that simple.
These issues could be from a cracked pipe, corroded part, or even a bad installation. Don’t make guesses at what could be a simple solution for a professional.
